BASS LAKE VEREENIGING

1. Security
Security is just fine, entrance is controlled by security personnel and the lake is situated on a mine's property

2. Ablution Facilities and their condition
There are some loo's available but never used them, got fish fever so bad that I never had the need to go

3. Braai/Cooking Facilities
Built up braai/s at main dam with lapa's all round

4. Day Venue only or Overnight Facilities
Only day visitors fishing from 06:00 to 18:00 and only during the week, no fishing is allowed on weekends

5. Popularity
It isn't all that popular because of the distances from PTA and JHB and a bit expensive see entrance fee's

6. How busy it gets
It doesn't get all that busy, been there twice and only once saw other people fishing the lake, late afternoon.

7. Bank, Boat or both types of angling is possible
Bank angling and small infalatbles - electric powered, float-tubes or kickboats.

8. How well you did
On both occasions once during winter and the last early Dec, caught more than single figures, some huge fish in the lake, lake record apparently is a fish over 7 kg's

It is located in Henly on Klip near Vereeniging See attached Map.

10. Directions

From PTA: take the M2 south, then onto the N12 towards Alberton. Take the R59 towards vereeniging and then take the Henley on Klip off-ramp (Henley Drive) go down this road for approximately 1,2km's and turn left at the second stop sign. Continue straight down this road and it will take you right up to the entrance of the mine property.

11. Entrance and other fees

Entrance fees are R50-00 per person and an additional R100 for a fishing permit is payable. In addition to this you'll be required to pay an additional R300 deposit if you prefer not wanting to submit your vehicles keys to the personnel on site.

A small trawling motor is ideal to sneak around bass lake. Here's the biggest of the day, what an awsome fight, taking me into the reeds and barely hanging on!

BUFFELSPOORT DAM

1. Security
Security is okay, Guarded main-gate and security Guard on duty after hours

2. Ablution Facilities and their condition
Ablution facilities are available but I have never used them (haven't been there long enough)

3. Braai/Cooking Facilities
Braai facilities are not really all common so take along a portable unit.

4. Day Venue only or Overnight Facilities
Day and Overnight visitors allowed

5. Popularity
It is popular, but due to distance from JHB and PTA not that popular with most of these cities Residents

6. How busy it gets
It can get very busy, especially in Summer

7. Bank, Boat or both types of angling is possible
Bank angling and boat angling

8. How well you did
Normally land/boat between 12 and 15 fish for the day

It is located +/- 86 km's west of PTA, taking the N4 towards Rustenburg from the N1, just after Zambesi Off-ramp in PTA.

10. Directions

Take the N1 North towards Pietersburg past Pretoria. After passing the Zambesi Off-ramp take the next off -ramp N4 Rustenburg and go through two(2) Tollgates (currently R7-20) each. Continue with this road Until you get the Off-ramp Marikana which you then take. Turn left on top and travel down this road till it ends in a T-junction with the Old Rustenburg road. Turn Right and travel for about 1 to 1,5 km's until you reach a 3-way stop with a raod joining from the left, turn left and travel down thia road for about 2 - 4 km's and the entrance to the dam should be on your left. Be on the lookout for Green Plastic water tanks the entrance is just past them.

Entrance fees are R10-00 per Vehicle and R15-00 per Adult, I'm not too sure of the fees for staying over and form Boats, Tents and Caravan's.


A cracker of a morning a the spectacular Buffelspoort!


Buffelspoort is renowned for its bass and they actually ask at the gate to remove Mr Snorbek, but this 93cm fatboy came out at the inaugural fresh water kayak fishing series competition!

ROODEPLAAT DAM Nature Reserve

1. Security
Security is good, been fishing there for 18 years never had any problems.

2. Ablution Facilities and their condition
Various Toilets, some full ablution bocks in caravan park, all Gov. Nature Res, style.

3. Braai/Cooking Facilities
Braai facilities all over with Lapa's at some

4. Day Venue only or Overnight Facilities
Day visitors and overnight or camping allowed, gate times 06:00 - 18:00

5. Popularity
Very popular especially in summer, carp anglers and way too many Jet-ski's and boats.
6. How busy it gets
See point no 5

7. Bank, Boat or both types of angling is possible
Bank and boat angling.

8. How well you did
Have caught 35 rats and mice in 1 1/2 hours, largest caught 2.12kg's.

Moloto road, just north of Kameeldrift East, Pretoria,see attached map.

10. Directions

Take the N1 North and take the Zambesi off-ramp, turn right and go under the highway. Turn left at the traffic light at the Moloto road crossing, travel down this road for approximately 5-8 km's. Approaching a slight hill, the gate will be on the right a little hindin from the Moloto road so slow down on your approach to the hill.

Entrance fee's will be updated later, but realy not that expensive i.e. Boat, car and 2 people for the day =R115-00.

Mr Snorbek seems to be everywhere in Roodeplaat when they are spawning! Nicc struggling to hold up her 9kg catch.


The hysinth has been a problem at Roodeplaat in the past, but a huge clean up operation has really made a visable difference.

Haartebeespoort Dam

1. Security
Various parking options around the dam. Closest to the dam wall would be the yacht club, next best would be the public facility east of the yacht club.

4. Day Venue only or Overnight Facilities
The are a number of camping facilities around the dam.

5. Popularity
The popularity of the dam has decreased because of the hysinth problem as well as an algae problem.
The Dam now is quiet.

6. How busy it gets

7. Bank, Boat or both types of angling is possible
Preferably boat fishing to access more spots. Bank anglers have traditionally done well with Karp.

8. How well you did
Between 6 of us on kayaks we caught about 20 barbel. Biggest 9kg.

From the N14 Krugersdorp Highway catch the Sandton Haartebeespoort turnoff, head to Haartebeespoort.
